Family Therapy for Adult Children

and their Parents

When you're ready to break old patterns and build something new.

The relationship between adult children and their parents can be incredibly meaningful—and incredibly complicated. Years of history, unspoken expectations, emotional roles you’ve outgrown…it’s easy to get stuck in old dynamics, even when everyone genuinely wants closeness and connection.

If conversations tend to go sideways, if distance has crept in, adding spouses and/or grandchildren has shaken up the system, there are political differences, a key family member has passed away, or if you're walking on eggshells when you're together, Family Therapy can offer a chance to pause, reset, and find new ways forward.

This is not about rehashing everything that went wrong or placing blame. It's about understanding what’s happening now and how you got here—and working collaboratively to create new ways of being together that reflect who you are in the present and what kind of future you want as a family.

Why Family Therapy?

Family Therapy is ideal when:

  • Long-standing patterns of hurt, criticism, or misunderstanding keep surfacing

  • There’s emotional distance—but neither side wants to stay disconnected

  • One family member is feeling overwhelmed or shut out, and the system feels out of balance

  • You’re navigating a major life shift—aging parents, caregiving, marriages, births, empty nesting, death, estrangement or reunion

  • You’ve tried talking (or even therapy) before, but it didn’t lead to lasting change

With adult families, it’s not about parenting anymore—it’s about relating. And that often requires a new kind of conversation: one where emotional needs are named, past pain is acknowledged, and mutual respect can grow.

How it Works

  • A collaborative call to understand your family’s history, clarify goals, and design a format that meets your needs. Not all participating family members need to be present.

  • I meet individually with each person participating in the family sessions to gain deeper insight and understanding into what they see as the primary issues and what they hope will change moving forward.

  • After all individual meetings have occurred, I will suggest a format for moving forward. Typically the work happens over three to six 90- minute sessions. In-person therapy can occur over the course of one to three weekends. All formats are subject to change based on family needs and the progress being made. Additional family members are able to join as appropriate.

  • I am available to meet one on one with any family member after the family sessions have concluded to process content and next steps.

  • Sessions are held over Zoom or in-person per the family’s preference. In-person therapy can be held at my office in Houston or for additional fees, I can travel to you if all family members are located in the same place. Please fill out my contact form to inquire about pricing.

There’s a reason these relationships matter so much.

Beneath the frustration, resentment, or silence is usually something tender: the desire to feel close, to be respected, to repair what’s been broken. Family Therapy Intensives offer the time and space to begin that work with intention and care.

If you're ready to explore a new chapter in your relationship—with more clarity, boundaries, and compassion—I’d love to support you.
